1996년 어느 날 최재천 교수는 모 잡지사에서 처음으로 한국을 방문한 구달 박사를 인터뷰해달라는 요청을 받고 한 달음에 달려 나갔습니다. 인터뷰 후 제인 구달의 특집 기사가 실린 내셔널지오그래픽(National Geographic) 잡지에 구달 박사의 사인을 받으며, 우연히 같은 호에 최재천 교수의 박쥐 연구 기사가 함께 소개되었다는 것을 이야기했는데, 그 우연을 인연으로 둘의 우정은 지금까지 이어져오고 있습니다. 최재천 교수는 제인 구달의 환경운동 프로그램인 <뿌리와 새싹>의 국내 활동을 펼쳐왔고, 그 과정에서 장차 <제인구달연구소>의 한국지부를 설립하는 꿈을 품었습니다. 최재천 교수는 제인 구달 박사의 정신 및 철학과 깊은 공감대를 바탕으로 보다 포괄적인 법인의 설립에 착수하였고, 이러한 취지에 공감한 32명의 인사들과 힘을 모아 2013년 7월에 비영리 공익재단을 세웠습니다. 생명다양성재단이 출범하는 순간이었습니다.

One day in 1996, Professor Choi Jae-cheon was asked to interview Dr. Goodall, who visited Korea for the first time at a magazine and ran out in a single step. After the interview, he received Dr. Goodall's signature in the National Geographic magazine, which featured a special article by Jane Goodall, and said that Professor Choi Jae-cheon's bat research article was introduced in the same issue by chance, and their friendship has continued so far. Professor Choi Jae-cheon has been engaged in domestic activities of Jane Goodall's environmental movement program, Roots and Sprouts, and in the process, he dreamed of establishing a Korean branch of the Jein-Goodall Research Institute in the future. Professor Choi Jae-cheon started the establishment of a more comprehensive corporation based on Dr. Jane Goodall's spirit, philosophy, and deep consensus, and established a non-profit public foundation in July 2013 with 32 people who sympathized with this purpose. It was the moment when the Biodiversity Foundation was launched.
