1998년부터 2014년까지 서울대학교 디자인학부 교수로 재직하였다. 2007년 부터 2009년까지 서울특별시 초대 디자인서울총괄본부장(부시장)을 역임하면서 다차원적인 도시혁신 프로그램을 추진하였다. 창조경영대상2009, 한국디자인단체총연합회 공로상을 수상했으며, 국가로부터 황조근정훈장을 수훈하였다. (재)서울디자인재단 이사장, (사)한국공공디자인학회 회장, 국회공공디자인포럼 공동대표를 역임하였으며 2014년부터 2016년까지 (주) 한샘 사장 및 DBEW디자인센터 최고디자인경영자로 재직 후 2016년부터 2019년까지 제8대 계원예술대학교 총장으로 재직했다. 현재는 서울디자인재단의 이사장이자 국가건축정책위원회의 제7기 위원장으로서 서울에서 전국의 지자체에 이르기까지 디자인을 통한 도시혁신과 좋은 마을 만들기 선풍을 일으켰고, 디자인 분야의 전국적 고용창출 효과를 이끌어 낸 장본인이다.


From 1998 to 2014, Kwon Young-gul served as a professor in the Department of Design at Seoul National University. From 2007 to 2009, he held the position of the inaugural Head of the Seoul Design Headquarters (Vice Mayor) at the Seoul Metropolitan Government, where he led multidimensional urban innovation programs. His contributions earned him the 2009 Creative Management Award and the Merit Award from the Korean Federation of Design Organizations. He was also honored with the prestigious Hwangjo Geunjeong Medal by the Korean government. Kwon has held numerous leadership roles, including Chairman of the Seoul Design Foundation, President of the Korean Society of Public Design, and Co-Representative of the National Assembly Public Design Forum. From 2014 to 2016, he served as the President and Chief Design Officer of Hansem Co., Ltd. and the DBEW Design Center. From 2016 to 2019, he was the 8th President of Kaywon University of Art and Design.

Currently, Kwon is the Chairman of the Seoul Design Foundation and the 7th Chairman of the National Architectural Policy Committee. He has spearheaded nationwide initiatives to foster urban innovation and community development through design, from Seoul to municipalities across Korea, significantly contributing to job creation in the design sector.
